Today was the second and last day of us visiting Shintoku. I met many people and made many new friends, but what surprised me the most was how fast the students warmed up to us, even though we were only there for two days. The first day, I, as well as some others, were worried that the students were making fun of us since we couldn’t really understand what they were saying. When we walked around and they copied what we would say, or ask easy questions, I took it as mockery, but I think that was far from the truth. I think that the students would copy us so that they could learn a better American accent. I also think they asked easy questions so that there wouldn’t be any miscommunication and so that translating would be easier. Also, simple questions can be fun! Like what a dog sounds like in both America and Japan, two very different noises. Okunoin One thing that stood out to me today was the grandness of all the statues and shrines. When I was walking I would just keep walking and not stop because each one is better than the next and grander. The carving made from wood and and stone seem like something very meticulous and made me wonder how they would be able to keep up during construction. The statues look like giant entrance to a temple and they look like they are going to be able to stay there forever. One thing that also surprised me was how even though there were 10s of thousands of statues and shrine in the woods they all look like they each made meticulously and even though all of them are not meant to go together because they are each special they all somehow create this effect on you when looking at them like “wow this is amazing." Today was our first day at Kojo and I instantly found so many differences between Kojo and McMahon. Walking in Kojo, I saw many drink vending machines, heck even an ice cream vending machine. If there was one at McMahon, I’d waste all my lunch money (Sorry mom :( ) Students at Kojo have more respect for their classrooms and the teachers than what I have seen through my academic career. The students are dead silent when the teachers are teaching and they have more responsibility over their education. The teacher is not telling napping students (I’ve seen 5 students sleep at the same time) to wake up. Also, the students clean their classrooms and hallways in the daily “Osoji” ensuring that their school is clean. The commute was also different even though it was the same sequence of bus-train-bus. Firstly, you enter the bus from the rear and press your IC card to check in and when you get off, the fare is deducted by stop because the fares differ. The train station was gigantic and it w...
