On November 8th we met our Shintoku high school host families. Meeting our host families in that first night help you understand a lot about the Japanese lifestyle.
On the way to our host families however, something else unique happened. We had missed our stop on the train, so we had to figure out a new route by train, and on the first new train we rode, we saw about 5 or 6 little children running and yelling and later they got onto the train. The door almost closed on them if Destins head didn't block the door when he fell back, or if we didn't hold the door on the train. The little kids were very cute and it was our first time seeing a group of school children together. Destin, the Senpai who spoke the best Japanese was comfortable with speaking to the little children so we went with Destin to talk to the kids. They spoke very little English so it was sort of a challenge, but they were very cute. They had Nintendo DS's so we were able to connect with them through that. They seemed shocked at the games Destin and Andrew had.
After meeting the little kids, we were all happy and started waving at all the school kids we saw, even high schoolers, and we waved at them and they waved back, and we played rock, paper, scissors, with girls on another train through the window. Then, it happened again, we met another group of school kids by themselves on a train, all wearing matching red hats. They were laughing at us when we tried to speak Japanese at first, but then we got a conversation going and it was cool to talk to them. I don't know if they liked us Americans or if they were too cool, but it was cool to talk to these kids.
Like how the Japanese say, if it happens twice, it'll happen a third time, so I look forward to seeing more Japanese kids on the train.
